The brand-new song “ADJOURN IT,” which features Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, System Of A Down singer Serj Tankian, and Tom‘s teenage son Roman Morello, has just made its web debut, as per theprp. Long-time friends Morello and Tankian founded the non-profit organization Axis Of Justice in 2002 to fight racism in the rock and metal scene and promote social justice concerns.
Clips from the film SALT OF THE EARTH (1954) are woven throughout the “ADJOURN IT” video to reflect the song’s theme of resistance in the face of prejudice and injustice. The film is based on a true story of Mexican-American miners fighting against labor exploitation, racism, and institutional oppression, and was made by three Hollywood executives blacklisted for their political beliefs. It stars real zinc miners and was one of the first ever truly independent films. SALT OF THE EARTH was a powerful act of defiance in its time and more than half a century later, its themes continue to echo through today’s political climate. “ADJOURN IT” channels the defiant legacy of the film reinforcing the importance of solidarity in bringing people together against fear and division. Morello stated that this track was inspired by “the persecution of immigrants across the land and the counterforce of a heroic resistance to the rising tide of fascism. ADJOURN IT is a ‘Freedom Song’ of crushing riffs for justice and equality.“
At Tom‘s recently announced “Power To The People” festival, which will take place on October 3 at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, all three of the aforementioned musicians are slated to perform. Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, and more will perform at that occasion. Despite being billed as a nonpartisan event, the bill for the festival has several opponents of the current Trump administration, suggesting that it is acting as counterprogramming to MAGA-aligned live events scheduled by the current U.S. administration.
