The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Torpedo Comics, owned by drummer John Dolmayan of System Of A Down, has closed its Las Vegas shop after almost ten years, as per Blabbermouth. In the past, Torpedo Comics was referred to as Nevada’s biggest collectibles retailer. The Torpedo brand will remain active online at torpedocomics.com even while its physical site is closing. Torpedo Comics was founded by Dolmayan and focuses on Golden Age/Silver Age back issues. Before Dolmayan opened the Torpedo Comics business in Vegas, he had been collecting rare comics for almost twenty years. A sign on the door of the shop states:
Thank you to the Las Vegas community for supporting us for the last 9 years!
This is what Dolmayan stated:
I started selling in the early ’90s, because at 18 years old, it’s tough to go to your parents and say, ‘Can I have some money for comic books?’ Initially, I started off by losing a lot of money trying to sell books at conventions and stuff like that until I figured out how to do it. By the time System got signed (in the late ’90s),I was making $55,000-$60,000 a year. I took a huge pay cut to join System.
Dolmayan turned his business into an internet store in 2003 after persuading Heidi Woan, the wife of Linkin Park turntablist Joe Hahn, to purchase her husband a $10,000 issue of “The Incredible Hulk” No. 1. At first, his physical store carried 60,000 current and antique issues.
