Australian deathcore outfit Thy Art Is Murder have revealed Tyler Miller of Aversions Crown as their new vocalist. Last week, the band digitally released their latest album “Godlike” with newly re-recorded vocals from the then unidentified musician. No advance notice was given of the switch.
As the album was released, the announcement of the band’s decision to fire their frontman CJ McMahon was made. Allegedly, he was ousted from Thy Art Is Murder because of the sharing of his increasingly controversial viewpoints on many subjects, which had become an issue for the band, including his infamous commentary on gender identity.
When announcing McMahon‘s firing, the band stated:
We understand that this may come as a surprise and we want to assure you that this decision was made to preserve the band’s integrity and direction.
What transpired over the past month was not the cause of this action, but just another symptom of the drawn out breakdown in his character and judgement. The straw that broke the camels back if you will long story short the fallout has been immense.
We were lobbed with threats to destroy Thy Art Is Murder from the inside if we did not capitulate to various ideologies that he holds. Everyone has their own right to free speech and to seek their truth; they are also free to receive the consequences that come with it.
Since McMahon was let go, he claimed he was forced to make an apology video, and that he was unaware in advance of the band’s decision to replace him on the album.
A version of “Godlike” featuring McMahon‘s original vocals can be found on physical copies of the album.
Thy Art Is Murder opted to reveal the identity of their new vocalist live onstage on September 27, during their show at the Turbinenhalle 2 in Oberhausen, Germany. That show kickstarted their European/UK tour with Whitechapel, Fit For An Autopsy and Spite.
