They say those who seek will find. It’s true—you have to be prepared. But sometimes things just flow. The more you seek, the worse it can get. As the saying goes, if you let go, it will manifest.
Christian Eigner was already a well-known session drummer in his native Vienna when he moved to London at 25. By chance, he connected with keyboardist Dave Clayton, who was working with Depeche Mode on their album “Ultra” (1997). Clayton told Eigner that Dave Gahan’s band was looking for a drummer, so he recommended him—and the rest is history. “There was no audition with Depeche Mode. We just met up and played,” says the Austrian musician.
In early November, Chaoszine sat down with the renowned drummer to talk about joining Depeche Mode, his drum kit, the band’s influence on many metal groups, his solo drum concerts and his memories of friend and bandmate Andy Fletcher, who died of an aortic dissection at home on 26 May 2022.
