System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan has reportedly spent $825,000 on a rare copy of Action Comics #1, the historic 1938 comic book that introduced Superman to the world.
The purchase took place during New York Comic Con earlier this month, with the transaction handled by Metropolis Collectibles. According to the company, Dolmayan acquired an original, unrestored copy of the comic that had not yet been professionally graded. The sale reportedly set a record for an ungraded copy of the issue in its original condition.
The musician is no stranger to the world of comic book collecting. Alongside his career with System Of A Down, Dolmayan has spent decades buying, selling and collecting rare comics. He is also the founder of Torpedo Comics and has been involved in publishing independent titles including Ascensia and Dead Samurai.
Speaking about the drummer’s passion for collecting, Metropolis Collectibles president Vincent Zurzolo explained that Dolmayan has dedicated much of his life to comic books and continues to work in the industry whenever he is not touring with his band.
This is not Dolmayan’s first copy of Action Comics #1. Earlier this year, he purchased a restored copy graded 8.5, describing ownership of the historic issue as a longtime dream.
The latest acquisition came during a particularly successful New York Comic Con for Metropolis Collectibles. The company sold two copies of Action Comics #1 at the convention for a combined total exceeding $2 million. The second copy, a slightly restored example graded 9.0, fetched $1.3 million.
The comic’s value has continued to reach extraordinary heights among collectors. In January 2026, another copy of the same issue sold for $15 million, establishing a new record for the most expensive comic book ever sold.
