In 1994, the Armenian-American heavy metal group System Of A Down was founded in Glendale, California. Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards), Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass), and John Dolmayan (drums), who took Andy Khachaturian’s position, have been the band’s original members since 1997. Three of the band’s five studio albums debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, demonstrating their commercial success. In addition to receiving four Grammy Award nominations, System Of A Down’s song “B.Y.O.B.” took home the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy in 2006.

Renowned for their politically charged lyrical content, many of their compositions address social and political issues, such as the anti-war message conveyed in “B.Y.O.B.” and the critique of the prison industrial complex and the war on drugs in “Prison Song.” The band entered a hiatus in 2006 and subsequently reunited in 2010. Aside from releasing two new songs in 2020 (“Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz“), they have not issued any new material since their 2005 albums, “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize”. System of a Down has achieved global record sales exceeding 12 million units, with two singles, “Aerials” and “Hypnotize,” reaching the top position on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. All band members possess Armenian heritage, either as descendants of Armenian immigrants or as immigrants themselves.
