The Gathering is a Dutch rock ensemble established in Oss, North Brabant, in 1989. The current lineup includes founding members René Rutten (guitar) and Hans Rutten (drums), along with Hugo Prinsen Geerligs (bass) and Frank Boeijen (keyboards), with former lead vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen serving as a touring performer.

Their initial releases were characterized by atmospheric doom metal, drawing influence from extreme metal bands such as Celtic Frost and Hellhammer. The band experienced multiple changes in vocalists before achieving prominence in 1995 with the album “Mandylion”.

“Mandylion” marked the debut of lead singer Anneke van Giersbergen and was the first of their works to appear on Dutch music charts. The introduction of van Giersbergen prompted a stylistic transition from gothic metal toward influences from shoegaze, post-rock, and trip hop, beginning with their fifth studio album, “How to Measure a Planet?”, in 1998.
