Soulfly was founded in Phoenix, Arizona. Max Cavalera, the former leader of Sepultura, founded Soulfly following his departure from the Brazilian group in 1996. Thirteen studio albums, a tour EP, twenty-three singles, a video album, and twelve music videos have all been released by the band thus far. Their most recent album, “Chama”, was released in October 2025. Their first album, “Soulfly”, was published on April 21, 1998. Similar to Cavalera’s former band SepulturaSoulfly blends several metal genres with Brazilian tribal and world music. Later albums included topics such as war, brutality, aggressiveness, enslavement, hatred, and wrath, while the original lyrics focused on spirituality, politics, and religion.
