Skindred release new single with official video “Can I Get A”
The brand-new track “Can I Get A” by Welsh ragga metal legends Skindred has been released, as per Blabbermouth. This song is the third from the band’s next album, “You Got This,” which is scheduled for release on April 17. “Can I Get A” is an inspirational song of resiliency and defiance with playful sonic nods to the ’80s, such as a Phil Collins-style drum break and a soaring gospel backing vocal. It begins with a jovial electro-honky-tonk intro that leads directly into an infectiously singalong pop chorus, complete with “woop-woops”.
But if you listen closely to the lyrics of “Can I Get A,” you’ll find a little autobiography in song that tackles topics of family struggles and childhood poverty, which are made bearable by the love and support of those closest to you. Benji Webbe, the lead vocalist of Skindred, recalls how he was nurtured by his older brother, who was just a child himself, after becoming an orphan.
It’s me as a child seeing my friends with all these amazing things that people take for granted that I never had. I was eleven years old and was worried what my life would become. A lot of kids where I lived got into trouble and ended up in prison. I was just gonna grab that microphone and see where it would take me. I want to empower people to know that you can be what you want to be. Don’t spend your life worrying about what you haven’t got. Live your life because now is the time.
