Anette Olzon was unknown to many when she joined Nightwish in the spring of 2007, but it took only five years and two masterpieces, Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum, to have her name written into an important chapter of heavy metal history. After leaving the Finnish band, she started different projects, such as the symphonic metal band The Dark Element with guitarist Jani Liimatainen, and the studio project Allen/Olzon with vocalist Russell Allen of Symphony X; but her solo career has also evolved to become her primary focus as an artist, having already released three albums.
After a few years away from the stage, during which she focused only on studio recordings, Anette Olzon returned to touring last year. Since then, she has been performing around the world, singing a mix of classics from her days with Nightwish and songs from her solo albums. Yet, after so many years in the spotlight, her journey as a vocalist still raises many questions. What were her first bands and influences? How did her parents react to seeing her sing heavy metal?
