Former DragonForce and Skid Row singer ZP Theart has released his own interpretation of Nightwish‘s “Nemo”, accompanied by a studio performance video on his official YouTube channel.

The story behind the announcement

Originally released in 2004 on Nightwish‘s album “Once”, “Nemo” became one of the Finnish symphonic metal band’s best-known songs, with Tarja Turunen providing the original lead vocals.

Theart’s version retains the song’s recognizable melodies and dramatic atmosphere while replacing the original operatic approach with his grittier, power-metal-influenced delivery.

The singer first rose to prominence as the original frontman of DragonForce, appearing on albums including “Valley Of The Damned”, “Sonic Firestorm”, “Inhuman Rampage” and “Ultra Beatdown”. He later fronted Skid Row before leaving in 2022.

His recent solo activity has included the single “Electric Beings”, the solo debut “Dark To Light” and a new interpretation of DragonForce‘s “Through The Fire And Flames”.

The “Nemo” recording is the latest example of Theart revisiting familiar metal material through his own vocal style.

ZP Theart was born on May 27, 1974, in Clanwilliam, located in the Western Cape region of South Africa. He was raised in Hazyview, situated in the Eastern Transvaal, now recognized as the Mpumalanga province, on a farm cultivating bananas and lychees.

Theart recounted that, according to his mother, he exhibited an early inclination towards music at the tender age of three by mimicking the act of singing into a spoon, which he pretended was a microphone, while listening to the radio. During his formative years, he absorbed the sounds of South African musicians such as Gé Korsten, Carika Keuzenkamp, and Rina Hugo, but it was his older brother who introduced him to a diverse array of music through cassette tapes acquired from high school, including artists like A-ha, Alphaville, Sandra, and Depeche Mode.

A pivotal moment in his musical journey occurred when he encountered Bon Jovi’s album “Slippery When Wet,” which he later described as a personal favorite. He expressed admiration for the lyrical phrasing and composition of the songs, which resonated with him deeply.

Subsequently, Theart expanded his musical repertoire by exploring additional bands, including Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Skid Row, ultimately identifying Bon Jovi and Skid Row as his preferred groups.
