“Hopefully the world is still here when we are coming back!” – interview with Heilung

Author Askar Ibragimov - 8.4.2025

I would say we were lucky here in Helsinki, as Heilung was to start their tour from the city and came two days earlier to rehearse. This thankfully allowed the band to squeeze in some time for an interview. Even so, the tight rehearsal schedule was so that we got a bit less time than expected.

From its start in 2017, Heilung went very far. More and more people recognize both the uniqueness of their rituals and the transformative value of their music. Guess that is because people in the band – not just “core members”, but virtually everyone – are likeminded, interesting people who invest their souls in the ritual. There is a telltale in Mathias Nordvig’s book “Ancerstral North“: at some gig, they had electricity completely out. They continued their ritual unstopped, being immersed. Mathias concludes that for them, it was not a “concert” but a fundamentally different experience.

Earlier this year Heilung announced a hiatus, preceded by some final show in a “secret location”. (After some FOMO was created, they revealed that it will be in Rättvik, Sweden, on August 17, 2025.) With this in mind, I decided to steer this interview not to be about the current tour, but more about what Heilung was and is. Some reflection, some significant moments of the journey, some background, and some technical aspects. Kai is the main source of historical/shamanic material, Chris is heavily involved with sound production and technical matters for the visuals, and Maria and Chris are the main “composers.” I do hope we have a balance in this interview. One might think — they are unquestionably a big act now, booking very large festivals, traveling many continents, and amassing a huge fanbase. For instance, The HU, the famous Mongolian metallers, are a warm up act for them. Would that affect their behavior? My answer would be no, not in the slightest. They are busy, but very normal and open people. I just asked the honest questions that I had in mind.

We are deeply thankful to Sébastien Gamez (Season of Mist) and Martin Skou (Heilung tour manager) for the possibility of having the interview and outstanding logistic support onsite that allowed us to record it to the best possible quality.
