A limited edition deluxe box set honoring the band’s 40th anniversary has been unveiled by Norwegian black metal icon Darkthrone, as per Lambgoat. Peaceville Records will issue the 10-disc set, titled “The Fist In The Face Of God,” on March 6, 2026. “The Fist in the Face of God” is available for preorder here. The package focuses on Darkthrone‘s core black metal era and comprises nine albums spanning 1992–2004. The band’s rare 1996 Oslo live performance, a DVD with a new 2025 interview with Fenriz and Nocturno Culto along with historic footage, a 48-page book authored by longtime collaborator Harald Fossberg with rare images, and various posters and art prints are among the extra materials.
The Norwegian black metal group Darkthrone is based in Kolbotn, Akershus. Darkthrone was founded in 1986 as a death metal band called Black Death. In 1991, they changed their sound to black metal, drawing inspiration from Bathory and Celtic Frost, and became one of the top bands in the Norwegian black metal scene. Before switching to black metal, the band’s sole death metal album, “Soulside Journey”, was released in 1991. The “Unholy Trinity” refers to their first three black metal albums, “Transilvanian Hunger” (1994), “Under a Funeral Moon” (1993), and “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” (1992). These albums are considered to be among the most influential black metal releases and the pinnacle of the band’s career.
Since guitarist Zephyrous left the group in 1993, Fenriz and Nocturno Culto have been the only members of Darkthrone. Despite their efforts to stay out of the popular music scene, they have recently worked with the National Library of Norway on displays that highlight black metal and Norwegian cultural history. Since 2006, Darkthrone‘s sound has strayed from traditional black metal, integrating aspects of doom metal into their most recent releases as well as punk, speed metal, and classic heavy metal.
