Aerosmith reunited with longtime drummer Joey Kramer during their October 29 performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, marking his first appearance with the legendary rock band in more than six years.
The concert was the first of two special “California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends” events and also marked Aerosmith‘s first full-band performance since September 2023.
Kramer, who last performed with Aerosmith during their Las Vegas residency in February 2020, returned to the drum kit for the evening’s closing performance of “Walk This Way”. He was joined behind the drums by longtime drum technician John Douglas, who has previously filled in for him during live shows.
The band’s six-song set also featured a special appearance from Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who handled drumming duties for the first five songs.
With Grohl behind the kit, Aerosmith performed “Toys In The Attic“, “Back In The Saddle”, “Sweet Emotion” and “Dream On“, before welcoming actor and musician Johnny Depp to the stage for “The Train Kept A-Rollin’“.
The concert brought together vocalist Steven Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and Kramer for a rare reunion of the band’s classic lineup.
The evening also featured performances from Guns N’ Roses, The Black Crowes, Heart, Billy Idol, Sammy Hagar, Godsmack frontman Sully Erna and several other guest musicians. Comedian Bill Burr hosted the event, with Don Was serving as musical director.
Aerosmith‘s return comes more than two years after the band announced its retirement from touring in August 2024 due to Tyler’s ongoing vocal problems. The singer suffered a fractured larynx during a September 2023 performance, forcing the cancellation of the remaining dates on the band’s farewell tour.
Although Aerosmith have not announced plans to resume regular touring, the Hollywood Bowl concerts offer fans an opportunity to see the group performing together once again.
The second “California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends” concert is scheduled for November 1 at the Hollywood Bowl.
