In February 1995, Sully Erna decided to establish a new musical ensemble as the lead vocalist after more than 23 years of drumming experience, including over two years with the now-defunct band Strip Mind. His new group, initially named The Scam, comprised Erna on vocals, Robbie Merrill on bass, local guitarist and friend Lee Richards on guitar, and Tommy Stewart on drums. The band promptly changed its name to Godsmack following the recording of a demo. They began performing at small venues in their hometown of Boston, gaining local recognition. Popular tracks such as “Keep Away” and “Whatever” propelled them to prominence within the Boston and New England music scenes. The band’s name is not derived from the Alice in Chains song of the same name; Erna stated that it originated from an incident involving a cold sore that developed shortly after a former bandmate.
