Few guitarists have left as lasting a mark on death metal as Jack Owen. As a founding member of Cannibal Corpse, later a key songwriter in Deicide, and now the driving creative force behind Six Feet Under, Owen has spent more than four decades helping shape the genre.
Before Six Feet Under took the stage at Mystic Festival in Gdańsk, Poland, on June 3rd, Chaoszine caught up with Jack Owen to discuss the band’s latest album “Next to Die”, his songwriting process, writer’s block, the evolution of death metal and what it was really like to witness the birth of the legendary Florida death metal scene.
During the conversation, Owen also reflected on the creative freedom he has found in Six Feet Under after his years in Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, revealed how true crime documentaries have become an unlikely source of lyrical inspiration, and explained why he still believes traditional death metal songwriting has a place alongside today’s increasingly technical extreme metal.
