The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra reveals two shows honoring the Gothenburg sound

Author Benedetta Baldin - 22.4.2026

At a forthcoming event called “The Gothenburg Sound,” the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to the compositions of In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and At The Gates, as per theprp. The three groups, all from Gothenburg, Sweden, contributed to the development of Swedish melodic death metal during the 1990s and beyond. Fan favourites from the aforementioned band’s catalogues will be fully orchestrated for these two special performances. They will take place on December 4 and 5 at the Konserthus in Gothenburg, Sweden.

It’s a great honor to finally announce that the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra will perform a tribute to the “Gothenburg Sound”.

This has been in the works for quite some time, and hearing Dark Tranquillity, together with songs from At the Gates and In Flames, translated for a full orchestra is something we never could have imagined when this all began.

GSO is Sweden’s national orchestra and one of Europe’s premier orchestras, so to be recognized like this by our hometown is truly special.

Join us for this unique milestone in our journey on December 4 and 5.

This is a big deal!

From underground to world-class symphonic sounds. The symphony orchestra takes on the melodic death metal that put Gothenburg on the rock map for good. Riffs are transformed into fiery string passages and pulsating percussion in iconic tracks by At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity and In Flames. No amplified guitars, no growling vocals – but all the more power in the form of a full wind section, strings and percussion, opening the door to new, unexpected dimensions.

Under the baton of conductor Josef Rhedin, we will experience key works from the three bands, in specially written arrangements created by Johan Lindström and composer John Metcalfe. Metcalfe is known, among other things, for his work with U2, Coldplay and Peter Gabriel.

Even those who have never set foot at a hard rock concert will recognise this melodic world. Much of the Gothenburg sound is close to Swedish folk music and traditional classical music – with a distinct melancholy, long melodies and a varied expression where the raw and the sweet meet.

The concert is also a warm tribute to the memory of Tomas ‘Tompa’ Lindberg. As the frontman of At The Gates, Lindberg was one of the most significant figures behind the Gothenburg sound.

Conductor Josef Rhedin moves with ease between musicals, opera and symphonic music and has worked with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, as well as with Robyn and Helen Sjöholm.

This is the concert for anyone curious about Gothenburg’s modern musical heritage. Here, two of the city’s most important musical exports – hard rock and the Symphony Orchestra – come together and open the door to anyone who wishes to step inside.
