Special screening announced to commemorate 40 years of ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’

Author Benedetta Baldin - 1.6.2026

On May 31, 1986, up-and-coming filmmakers John Heyn and Jeff Krulik entered the Capital Center parking lot in Landover, Maryland, and made pop culture history when they captured excited Judas Priest fans prior to a performance, as per Blabbermouth. No one could have predicted that the resulting short film, “Heavy Metal Parking Lot,” would be widely regarded as one of the best rock documentaries ever made forty years later. The 60 minutes of original source material, prior to editing, will be shown in Silver Spring, Maryland, for the first time in public on May 31, 2026, 40 years to the day after it was shot. As history is being made, audiences will witness what was captured that afternoon in real time, with live commentary from Jeff and John.

In addition, there will be a 16-minute “Heavy Metal Parking Lot” and an opportunity to meet some of the celebrities. A feature documentary on the saga, including a follow-up with the stars, a Kickstarter-driven book project to tie in with a Los Angeles exhibit by Roger Gastman and “Beyond The Streets” gallery (similar to the 30th anniversary at the University of Maryland), a fundraising concert, and a script read are among the additional plans to celebrate this historic year (and beyond), according to Heyn and Krulik.

The idea behind “Heavy Metal Parking Lot” was straightforward: Krulik and Heyn set up a video camera in the Capital Center parking lot in Washington, D.C., and conducted interviews with Judas Priest fans who were having a good time prior to a performance. The outcome embodied the pinnacle of heavy metal culture: a cinematic take on reality TV, a beery piece of Americana, and what it’s like to be young and living in the mostly wasted present. Mullets, leather, denim, spandex, perms, ’70s Camaros, and metal ‘tude abound.
