Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium have released their tenth studio album, “Netherworlds”, today, October 16, 2026, via Century Media Records. To mark the release, the band are highlighting the epic track “The Hour Grows Late”, which features guest appearances from Amorphis members Tomi Joutsen, Tomi Koivusaari and Santeri Kallio.

Following the band’s previous singles, the new album takes listeners into a melancholic world of loss, aging, love and longing. According to frontman Niilo Sevänen, the record’s lyrical themes are closely tied to memories of people and animals who are no longer with us, as well as the passing of youth and the search for lost love.

Sevänen explains the meaning behind the album’s title:

“On this album, love and death are intertwined in a very tangible way. Relatives, friends and pets who have passed away are encountered in dream worlds, while we long for a lost summer, warmth and youth, and try to find a loved one who disappeared long ago amid nightmares. The journey ends on a comforting note, when a final peaceful resting place is found at death’s inn, at the end of a long path. ‘Netherworlds’ refers both to the dream world and to the afterlife, and in the lyrics these two worlds merge and overlap.”

Amorphis members appear on “The Hour Grows Late”

Guitarist Markus Vanhala describes “The Hour Grows Late” as one of the more ambitious pieces in Insomnium‘s catalogue. The song ventures into progressive territory while reflecting the album’s darker themes.

“‘The Hour Grows Late’ represents the more epic side of Insomnium’s music. It is a long musical journey that dares to venture a little deeper into the progressive shades of the album’s dark side. The new album deals with themes of loss and aging, and longing for the people and creatures who have left us behind and passed into the netherworld. The rest of us will surely follow, but not yet.”

Producer and recording engineer Miiro Varjus played a central role in shaping the album’s sound, working closely with the band throughout its creation. Mixing was handled by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, while Tony Lindgren mastered the record.

Insomnium‘s current lineup consists of Niilo Sevänen (vocals and bass), Ville Friman (guitar and clean vocals), Tomy Laisto (guitar and clean vocals), Markus Vanhala (guitar and clean vocals) and Markus Hirvonen (drums).
