Devin Townsend has shared a live orchestral performance of “Covered By Causes”, taken from his newly released concert album and film “The Moth: The War – Live in Groningen”. The release documents the premiere of Townsend’s ambitious orchestral-metal project in the Netherlands in March 2025.
The performance showcases the scale of the production, combining Townsend’s distinctive progressive-metal approach with a full orchestra, choir and band. The live album and accompanying Blu-ray were released on November 6, 2026.
“Covered By Causes” is the sixth piece in the concert’s running order, following “Enter The City”. The recorded version runs approximately eight minutes, making it one of the longer compositions in the first half of the performance.
The Groningen production was realized with the North Netherlands Orchestra and Choir under conductor Jukka Isakilla. Townsend assembled a band featuring both longtime collaborators and newer musicians to perform the large-scale work.
Originally conceived over many years, “The Moth” represents one of the Canadian musician’s most elaborate projects. The live presentation brings together symphonic arrangements, heavy guitars and theatrical storytelling in a single extended concert experience.
The concert recording is available in CD/Blu-ray and digital formats. The Blu-ray contains the full stage production, while the audio release follows the work from “Semi-prologue” and “War Beyond Words” through to the concluding “We Don’t Deserve Dogs”.
The set also includes pieces such as “The Moth”, “Orion”, “Prepare For War” and “Metamorphosis”. The release gives listeners who were not present at the Groningen premiere a chance to experience the work in its live orchestral form.
Devin Townsend has previously described “The Moth” as a long-gestating creative undertaking. The new video offers another glimpse of how the project translated from studio concept to a full concert performance.
