Dark and cold masterpiece: Review of Varmia’s new EP “Prolog”

In a metal industry where it’s nowadays fancy to include your folklore to stand out, where it’s used more and more as a marketing tool, Varmia comes and reminds us that metal is, first and foremost, a product that’s true and genuine to the core. They use and emphasize their own Baltic folklore in a brilliant fashion, serving the music and giving it an even darker atmosphere.

Cold, sharp and blazing black metal achieved in a very creative way, with heavy riffs, and tribal vocals that contrast the growls, as well as ethnic instruments that give the feeling that you’re wandering in the mountains of Poland.

That’s an EP that’s balanced and composed, and I’m left thirsty for more of that bass that lacerates your skin endlessly, that raw guitar tone and dissonant riffing, mixed with progressive song structures. A good mix between authentic Baltic music, and the most extreme and brutal black metal. Add that to the relentlessly beating drums, violent and fast, but with a feel of tribal percussions and you’re only looking forward for more of the same. A real virtuoso drum work.

The production is in line with all the vibe that is communicated with the EP, as well as the visuals, the music videos and the artworks, a complete artistic product front to end. It would be interesting to see the band live. Let’s keep an eye out for them.
