Court rules Brady Ebert (formerly of Turnstile) unfit for trial

Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been deemed incompetent to stand trial in his ongoing attempted murder case, local outlet The Baltimore Banner reports, as per MetalInjection. The ruling came during an evaluation hearing this morning, where Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Karla Smith found Ebert to be a danger to himself and others. Ebert faces charges following an incident where he struck William Yates—the father of his former bandmate—with a vehicle. Originally scheduled for trial on September 25, Ebert has now been remanded to the custody of the Maryland Department of Health, where he will remain until a follow-up competency hearing on January 19.

During the proceedings, Ebert openly clashed with Judge Smith, demanding to speak about the case and his current circumstances. When denied, he launched into a courtroom outburst, shouting that he had fired his attorney, Mark Sobel, during a pre-trial conference earlier this month.

During his courtroom outburst, Ebert repeatedly asserted that his case represents an “extreme miscarriage of justice,” citing multiple grievances, including claims that law enforcement obtained his arrest warrant illegally. The former guitarist’s behavior escalated to the point where officers had to forcefully escort him from the courtroom. Addressing the scene, defense attorney Mark Sobel noted that Ebert’s erratic conduct directly illustrates his compromised mental state and unfitness for trial.
