Heavy metal stalwarts Cirith Ungol are back in the spotlight with the release of their latest live album “Live At The Roxy”, out now via Metal Blade Records. Available on CD, vinyl, and DVD, the album captures a fiery performance from early 2024 at the iconic Roxy Theatre on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip.
The gig wasn’t just another show — it was a full-on celebration of the band’s 2023 studio album “Dark Parade”. Fans were treated to a one-night-only experience where Cirith Ungol played the entire “Dark Parade” album front to back, sprinkling in timeless classics like “Join The Legion”, “Frost And Fire”, “Black Machine”, and of course, the crushing “Atom Smasher”.
As a taste of what’s in store on the live album, the band has dropped a blistering live video for “Relentless”. And relentless it is — the performance is a showcase of just how tight and commanding the band still is in 2024.
Drummer and founding member Robert Garven opened up about the song’s creation: “Egyptian and Hindu guitar scales have always fascinated me with their exotic vibe, so I wanted to build a snake-charmer-like melody around that. The rhythm had its roots in the track ‘The Fire’ from ‘One Foot In Hell’. Then came the signature theme – and boom, the song was born. Simple, direct, but super effective. I’m happy with how it turned out.”
He also dove into the track’s dark lyrical themes: “Many deceitful demons sabotage every attempt to keep our sanity in this mad nightmare. Prayers? Reality? For whom, and why? A winding path toward inevitable destruction – despite fragile attempts to avoid it. Does the future lead to emptiness? Right now, it sure feels like it. Eternal and black.”
