Veteran American metal outfit Byzantine is back with a gripping new single, “The Unobtainable Sleep”, offering a haunting preview of their upcoming album, “Harbingers”. The full record is set to drop June 13th via Metal Blade Records.
Guitarist Brian Henderson describes the track as a poetic meditation on death. Drawing influence from acts like Extol, Carcass, and Fear Factory, the song blends crushing riffs with a melodic undercurrent. It also features a guest guitar appearance by Russian musician Andrey Gadzhibalaev, while the vocal harmonies channel the distinct style of Jerry Cantrell.
“Harbingers” marks Byzantine’s seventh studio album and their first as a five-piece. Produced by Peter Wichers—known for his work with Soilwork and Nevermore—the album promises a fierce mix of heaviness and depth. The cover art features Empress Irene, symbolizing transformation, a fitting match for an album named after those who bring change.
Since their 2004 debut “The Fundamental Component”, Byzantine has traveled a winding road—complete with a breakup, a comeback, and a series of critically praised releases like “To Release Is To Resolve” and “The Cicada Tree”. With “Harbingers”, the band continues to evolve while staying rooted in the fierce sound that’s defined them for two decades.
