BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii metal ensemble established in Tokyo in 2010. The group comprises Suzuka Nakamoto, known as “Su-metal” (lead vocals and dance), Moa Kikuchi, referred to as “Moametal” (backing vocals and dance), and Momoko Okazaki, designated as “Momometal” (backing vocals and dance).
The band is produced by Kobametal, affiliated with the talent agency Amuse Inc. Their vocal performances are supported by instrumental accompaniment provided by session musicians collectively called the “Kami Band.”
BABYMETAL was conceived to merge heavy metal music with Japanese idol culture, incorporating intricate choreography. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, which features school-aged members who depart upon graduation, the band transitioned to an independent entity in 2013 after Nakamoto’s graduation from Sakura Gakuin.
The original lineup of the band comprised Su-metal, Moametal, and Yui Mizuno, who was known as “Yuimetal.” In 2018, Mizuno had been absent from live performances for nearly a year, and the band announced her departure due to health concerns. During her absence, the group performed with one or more backup dancers, including Okazaki, a former member of Sakura Gakuin who had served as a backup dancer. In 2023, Okazaki officially joined the band as the third member.
Babymetal has undertaken multiple concert tours, predominantly in Europe and the Americas. The band has released five studio albums: “Babymetal” (2014), “Metal Resistance” (2016), “Metal Galaxy” (2019), “The Other One” (2023), and “Metal Forth” (2025).
They regard “The Other One” as a conceptual album rather than their fourth standard studio album. Released in August 2025, “Metal Forth” was the first album to feature Okazaki and introduced a new artistic direction. Seven of its ten tracks are collaborations with international artists, including Bring Me the Horizon, Electric Callboy, and Tom Morello.
