Finnish musician Mika Karppinen, also known as Gas Lipstick, gained worldwide recognition as the drummer for the legendary band HIM, playing love metal and recording classic albums. After leaving the band in 2015, Gas explored different musical projects, mostly on drums, but his current band reveals a different and (for many) unknown side of his skills: a talented guitarist.
The new group called The Solitude was formed a few years ago by Karppinen on guitars, Janne Parviainen (Ensiferum, ex-Waltari) on drums, Aleksi Parviainen (Soulcage) on vocals, and bassist Ville Pelkonen (Jimsonweed), playing what they describe as “Epic Fucking Doom”. The influence is clear and undeniable, ranging from early Black Sabbath to Candlemass. After recording their first album in a single session at the legendary Finnvox Studios, the band is finally ready to release The Sound of Absent Life via Reaper Entertainment on April 3rd of 2026.
Promoting the new record, Chaoszine sat down with Gas and Aleksi in Helsinki, Finland, to talk about the band’s origins, the musical influences for this new project, and the recording process of their debut album. Check it out!
