In Friday’s SNL50: The Homecoming Concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York, the remaining members of Nirvana reunited with Post Malone for a ferocious performance of their iconic song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” A portion of the performance is available below. About two weeks after Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear’s most recent reunion, the rock group played a four-song show at FireAid, featuring vocals by St. Vincent, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, and Grohl’s daughter Violet. Adam Sandler, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live, dubbed the group “Post Nirvana” on Friday after considering Nirvana‘s 1992 debut on the show, which he described as “an explosive moment for all of us.” Post Malone‘s admiration for Nirvana is widely known. With the assistance of Travis Barker, the drummer for Blink-182, he led a livestream tribute to Nirvana during the COVID-19 pandemic, tearing through a 15-song cover performance. As part of Record Store Day 2025, the performance will be made available on vinyl for the first time. Malone also performed with Aerosmith at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards and recorded a song with Ozzy Osbourne. On SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, Eddie Vedder and the Roots sang Tom Petty‘s “The Waiting,” Arcade Fire covered David Bowie‘s “Heroes” with David Byrne and St. Vincent, Devo performed with Fred Armisen on drums, and Jack White covered Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
