Full circle: Dave Grohl finds inspiration in a band that started alongside Nirvana

Author Benedetta Baldin - 28.4.2026

In an interview with Zane Lowe for The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana discussed the release of Foo Fighters’ 12th studio album, “Your Favourite Toy,” on April 24 via RCA Records, as per MetalInjection. Grohl disclosed that he has fallen in love with a band from his time with Nirvana once more. In particular, he claimed to have developed a “newfound love for Alice In Chains.”

They’re like my favorite band now. They should have been 35 years ago but now I’m like, ‘Wait where was I on that one?’

In 1987, Alice in Chains entered the grunge scene in Seattle, Washington, the same year and state as Nirvana. Grohl’s attention might have been diverted, of course. However, vocalist and guitarist Jerry Cantrell and vocalist and rhythm guitarist Layne Staley initially invented the unique vocal style of harmonies that made Alice in Chains famous. Staley was replaced by William DuVall in 2005 following his death. Since then, both bands have been admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Every song you hear becomes like a strand in your DNA, those lyrics and those songs become a part of you, there’s a huge connectivity in the energy of music just as there is in the connectivity in the energy of everything.
