Tom Morello has dismissed suggestions that his teenage son Roman Morello is benefiting from nepotism rather than musical ability. The Rage Against The Machine guitarist defended the 15-year-old musician in a new interview, praising his natural ear and revealing that Roman co-wrote five songs on his latest solo album, “Everyone Gets Everything They Want”.
Roman has increasingly joined his father onstage and in the studio, drawing attention for his guitar playing as well as his contributions to the new record. Although their family relationship has prompted some critics to question his opportunities, Morello says his son has the talent to justify them.
Asked by Guitar World to name the most exciting up-and-coming guitarist, Morello immediately singled out Roman, saying: “It’s not nepotism when your kid’s that fucking good.”
The guitarist said he would happily compare his son’s playing with that of any other emerging musician. He also pointed to a difference in how they developed: while Morello believes he had to work for years to find his own musical voice, he says Roman has a natural ear for melody and riffs.
That ability has also influenced their writing partnership. Morello joked that he listens outside Roman’s bedroom door for promising guitar ideas and sometimes borrows the riffs he hears.
Morello revealed that his son contributed to five songs on “Everyone Gets Everything They Want”, which was released in September 2026. Among the examples he discussed were the title track and “Soldier in the Army of Love”.
According to Morello, Roman’s riffs share some recognizable family traits while introducing finger movements and musical ideas that the older guitarist would not naturally choose. He admitted that parts written by his son can even be challenging for him to learn.
The father-and-son collaboration has been visible beyond the recording studio. Roman has accompanied Morello on tour in recent summers, and videos of the young guitarist performing songs associated with his father have attracted considerable attention online.
In the same interview, Morello discussed his history with Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, describing the end of those bands as painful setbacks that ultimately allowed him to explore a wider range of musical projects.
He also called “Everyone Gets Everything They Want” his first true solo rock album and described it as some of the heaviest music he has made since the debut by Rage Against The Machine.
Roman’s involvement gives the album a personal dimension, connecting Morello’s distinctive guitar approach with a younger musician who is beginning to establish his own style.
