Thrashing through Milan: report of Nervosa’s great performance

Author Benedetta Baldin - 12.6.2023

Even though I am quite fond of all subgenres of heavy metal, the thrash one is definitely not one I am familiar with or accustomed to. But I was eager to make this acquaintance a friendship when I decided to attend the last night of the European tour of Nervosa, one of the bands I have always admired. Not because they are only female (like myself), but because they provide very high-quality performances, so last Sunday it was show time. A very special thanks to Stirred Zone and Marco Fatini for their kindness and professionalism!

Gravestone

Gravestone is an Italian melodic death metal band from Rome that has been making waves in the metal scene for quite some time. Their performances are known for their high energy and raw power, but unfortunately, their recent show seemed to fall short. The sound mixing was terrible, and it was hard to hear the individual instruments clearly. Additionally, the band could have improved their engagement with the crowd, as they seemed somewhat disconnected from their audience. On a more positive note, I was genuinely impressed by the skills of David on drums. While Gravestone certainly has the potential to put on an amazing show, they need to work on these issues if they want to truly captivate their fans.

Setlist:

  1. Corpse Embodiment
  2. Flagellation
  3. Eyes Without Sight
  4. Proud to be Dead
  5. Maters

Mechanical God Creation

The clock strikes 21:30, and it’s time for the second band of the evening to enchant us. Mechanical God Creation put on a decent set at their recent performance, despite the poor sound mixing. I could hear nothing but the drums and the bass, but the rest of the band seemed like it wasn’t even playing. The band’s high energy and aggressive sound though were still present, but the lack of proper mixing made it difficult to fully appreciate their performance. Despite this setback, the band still managed to impress their audience with their raw power and skilful musicianship. My favourite song of the evening has been “Black Faith“, which was delivered very flawlessly by Luciana on vocals.

Setlist:

  1. Illusions
  2. Walking Dead
  3. Till the Sun is no Longer Black
  4. Black Faith
  5. I am the Godless Man
  6. Overlord

Methedras

If we had to write a name about the history of thrash metal in Italy, it would be Methedras. The group from Monza has had many fans in the audience, and with an improved sound mixing that allowed their music to truly shine, it was like icing on the cake. Their intense energy and passion for their craft were evident as they played through their set, never missing a beat. The crowd was thrilled with their performance, headbanging and cheering throughout the show. Methedras‘ ability to connect with the audience and keep them engaged was truly impressive, making for an unforgettable night of thrash metal.

Setlist:

  1. Another Fall
  2. Injected Thoughts
  3. Envy Society
  4. Dead Silence
  5. Blind
  6. The Abyss
  7. Know It All

  9. Psychotic

Nervosa

And like all good things come to an end, this evening would also finish, but not before we could enjoy a full hour set of Nervosa. I was positively surprised by their chemistry on stage, their flawless technique and their engagement with the crowd. The band’s live shows are an embodiment of their music, with powerful guitar riffs, thundering bass lines, and relentless drumming. Luckily, the sound mixing was definitely better than the previous band, and this made the night even more special. Music is, of course, not only for the ears but for our hearts as well, and the choice of closing the tour in Milan was spectacular. The crowd kept on wanting more and more songs because when you have fun, you never want the show to end. And we can’t wait to welcome back Nervosa in Italy to amaze and inspire us once more.
