Smash Mouth take on Slipknot’s “Duality” in unexpected studio cover

Smash Mouth have ventured into considerably heavier territory by covering Slipknot‘s 2004 hit “Duality” as part of a new studio challenge organized by music education platform Musora.

The American pop rock band, best known for songs such as “All Star” and “Walkin’ On The Sun”, were given just three hours to reinterpret the nu metal classic in their own musical style.

Rather than simply recreating Slipknot’s original arrangement, the musicians were tasked with finding a way to make the song sound like Smash Mouth.

The challenge was documented in a new video titled “Smash Mouth Covers “Duality” On The Spot”, which follows the band as they experiment with ideas, develop their arrangement and ultimately perform the finished version.

During the session, Smash Mouth vocalist Zach Goode also discusses his own past connection to Slipknot, adding another dimension to the unlikely musical crossover.

Originally released on Slipknot’s third studio album, “Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)”, “Duality” became one of the Iowa metal band’s most recognizable songs. Its aggressive riffs, distinctive percussion and powerful vocal performance have made it a staple of Slipknot‘s live shows.

Smash Mouth, meanwhile, established themselves with a markedly different sound, combining pop rock, alternative rock and catchy melodies. Their breakthrough single “Walkin’ On The Sun” arrived in 1997, while “All Star” became a massive hit following its release in 1999.

The contrast between the two bands’ musical identities makes the Musora challenge particularly unusual, offering an opportunity to hear how a familiar metal track can change when approached by artists from another genre.

The video also gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the decisions involved in rearranging a well-known song under a strict time limit.
