Berlin was treated to a night of polished modern rock on May 5 as Storm Orchestra and Skillet took over Columbiahalle. Storm Orchestra opened with swagger, groove, and enough quirky hooks to win over a crowd that had barely finished its first beer. Opening with “Bright Soul,” they wasted no time establishing the evening’s tone. They performed “Piece of You,” “Drummer” and closed with “Suspect.” Skillet followed with the kind of high-energy performance that explains why they still fill venues around the world two decades into their career. Massive choruses, relentless lights, CO2 canons, and a room-wide singalong to older favorites such as “Awake and Alive,” “Whispers in the Dark,” “Hero,” and “Comatose” with newer material like “Unpopular,” and “Ash in the Wind”. “Monster” predictably turned Columbiahalle upside down. By the end of the night, Berlin was sweaty, exhilarated, and reminded that heavy music remains one of humanity’s better inventions.
