Seahawks kickoff season at Lumen Field with special performance by Soundgarden

In honour of football’s return, the Seattle Seahawks will host a unique “Countdown To Kickoff”, as per Blabbermouth. On Wednesday, September 9, the Seahawks will play their first game of the regular season at Lumen Field against the New England Patriots. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:20 p.m. PT on NBC. Additionally, Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam will perform the national anthem prior to the game as part of Soundgarden’s special halftime performance at the home opener. McCready will be speaking on behalf of the Washington Innocence Project, a partner of the Seahawks Spirit of 12.

Momsen, who has long regarded Soundgarden and the late Chris Cornell as her musical heroes, and McCready previously performed the band’s iconic song “Rusty Cage” with the band’s surviving members, drummer Matt Cameron, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Ben Shepherd at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in November 2025 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Toni Cornell, Chris’s daughter, sang “Fell On Black Days” with Nancy Wilson of Heart, while Brandi Carlile led a performance of “Black Hole Sun” with backing vocals by Momsen.

Thayil, Cameron, Cornell, Shepherd, and founding bassist Hiro Yamamoto, who played on Soundgarden’s first two EPs and LPs and was with the band from 1984 to 1989, were all part of the group’s induction. Shepherd, Cameron, and Thayil are collaborating on a new album called “Soundgarden,” which will include unreleased songs they did with Chris Cornell prior to the singer’s passing in 2017. Producer Terry Date, who oversaw Soundgarden’s “Louder Than Love” (1989) and “Badmotorfinger” (1991) LPs, is working with Cameron, Thayil, and Shepherd. Joe Barresi, a producer, engineer, and mixer who has worked with Avenged Sevenfold, Volbeat, Slipknot, Monster Magnet, Bad Religion, and many other major rock acts.
