‘V/H/S/Mixtape’, the ninth installment in the ‘V/H/S’ horror anthology series, premiered on Shudder on October 9th, as per theprp. Aside from the involvement of GWAR and other notable musicians, it was suggested that Tobias Forge, the mastermind behind Ghost, was also connected to the project. Following its release, viewers reported that Forge supervised a new music video for “Premature Burial,” a track from his former death metal band Repugnant. Interestingly, the credits for the recent performance of this 2003 song list Erik Danielsson of Watain as the vocalist.
Forge and Danielsson have maintained a longstanding friendship. Repugnant disbanded in 2011, after which Forge achieved commercial success with Ghost. The fact that Forge is revisiting an over two-decade-old song from a defunct band, now with an updated lineup, amid circulating rumors of his involvement in a death metal project, is noteworthy.
The potential for ongoing activity within the Repugnant camp remains uncertain. It remains to be seen whether further developments will occur. The credited performers on the song from the referenced film include Forge and Gottfrid Åhman, who are returning on guitars. Gustaf Lindström, formerly associated with Ghost, is contributing on bass, and Thomas Daun is performing on drums. Forge previously served as the vocalist for Repugnant. Notably, this collaboration has occurred while Forge is on a significant hiatus from Ghost.
The Swedish rock group Ghost was founded in Linköping in 2006. The band became well-known throughout the world after releasing their first album, “Opus Eponymous”, in 2010. “Infestissumam” (2013) and “Meliora” (2015), which peaked at number one in Sweden and number eight in the US, came next. The albums “Impera” in 2022 and “Prequelle” in 2018 came next. “Skeletá”, the band’s sixth studio album, debuted in 2025 and went on to become their first number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. With the exception of the lead vocalist, Ghost’s members are referred to as “Nameless Ghouls” because to their costumed on-stage presence. Known for its “demonic anti-pope” iconography, the lead singer has performed as “Papa Emeritus” on stage.
Tobias Forge was identified as the main singer in 2017 after a number of musicians who had collaborated with him on the Ghost project filed a lawsuit over payments. The band was nominated for multiple Swedish Grammy Awards, and their single “Cirice” won them a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2016.
