“Where the Goth Girls At?” is the third single taken from Queens of the Stone Age’s ninth studio album, “Perfecth”. The track combines raw, minimalist riffs with an explosive chorus, enriched by sumptuous string and wind arrangements. Inspired by Josh Homme’s memories and experiences of his youth in a suburb of Palm Desert, the song revolves around the themes of teenage love and the desire to impress others.
Speaking about the song, Homme says: ‘I used to watch the goth girls working at the JCPenney counter, transforming elderly ladies with make-up and goth clothes: that’s when I realised the only place I wanted to be was where the goth girls were. Teenage love – isn’t it brilliant?’
The video for the track was directed by the same team behind ‘Easy Street’, Christopher Gruse and Tony Wolski, and features comedian Steve Agee, dancer and artist Scarlett Kapella, singer and actress Lou Lou Safran, members of Queens, and copious amounts of black ink. Against the backdrop of an abandoned power station, the goth girls transform everyone they meet into their final form.
“Perfecth,” which was co-produced by Homme and the band’s bassist/vocalist Michael Shuman, was inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese technique of mending damaged objects.
Every song sounds like it’s from a different world. And that’s on purpose, because it’s trying to stitch together all these emotions revolving around love, lust, foolishness, and the sort of wisdom that comes as a gift from all that. – Josh Homme
