Primus announce cheese-inspired liquid vinyl edition of ‘Sailing the Seas of Cheese’

Experimental rock veterans Primus are giving their 1991 album “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” a fittingly bizarre makeover. A new limited-edition vinyl pressing, featuring a sealed layer of yellow liquid designed to look like melted cheese, is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.

The unusual LP has been described by retailers as a “cheese”-filled liquid vinyl edition. Despite its appearance, the record contains a cheese-inspired liquid rather than actual dairy products, and it is designed to remain fully playable.

A record that looks like it is filled with cheese

The 12-inch, 33 RPM release incorporates a sealed layer of yellow liquid that moves inside the disc as it spins. According to the official product description, the effect does not interfere with playback, and each copy will have its own distinctive appearance as the liquid shifts.

Collectors are advised to handle the pressing carefully and avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures or unnecessary pressure. The special edition is listed for €89.99 through European retailer Bravado, with a November 20 release date. Availability and pricing may differ between territories.

The new variant should not be confused with the separate “Cheese Melt” colored-vinyl edition of the album, which was released earlier in 2026. That pressing uses a conventional colored record rather than a liquid-filled construction.

Primus revisit their breakthrough 1991 album

Originally released in May 1991, “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” was Primus’ second studio album and their major-label debut. It helped establish the band’s distinctive mixture of funk, progressive rock, metal and absurdist humor.

The record features some of the group’s best-known songs, including “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver”, “Tommy the Cat” and “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers”. Its performances showcase Les Claypool’s unconventional bass playing, Larry LaLonde’s guitar work and Tim Alexander’s drumming.

The album’s original 13-track sequence is retained for the new pressing, which is aimed at collectors as well as fans looking to revisit one of the band’s defining releases.

Limited edition arrives later this month

The novelty pressing is currently listed for preorder at selected retailers. The Bravado product page provides images of the design, technical details and handling guidance.

With its animated, cheese-like liquid effect, the release brings the title of “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” to life in a way that seems especially appropriate for Primus.
