Bruce Springsteen‘s wife and longstanding member of the E Street Band, Patti Scialfa, has disclosed that she is still battling blood cancer. For the first time, Scialfa made her news public in the recently released documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band”.
In 2018, well, Bruce and I were doing a play on Broadway. I was diagnosed with early stage multiple myeloma. Touring has become a challenge for me.
Bone marrow plasma cells can develop into cancers like multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma treatment isn’t usually required immediately, according to the Mayo Clinic. The first course of action may be to closely monitor the multiple myeloma if it is not causing symptoms and is growing slowly. Rare is multiple myeloma. According to the American Cancer Society, less than 1% of women in the country receive a cancer diagnosis. Since 1984, Scialfa has been a part of the E Street Band. She got married to Springsteen in 1991, and the two of them had three sons together. The singer talked about how her touring life has evolved since receiving the diagnosis in Road Diary.
This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go. Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.
“Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band” had its world premiere on September 8th at the Toronto International Film Festival. On October 25, it will be made available on Hulu and Disney+. For the most part of 2024, Springsteen and the E Street Band have been on tour; shows are scheduled through November. Additionally, more European shows have been confirmed for 2025.
