Opeth parts ways with drummer Martin Axenrot – Therion’s Sami Karppinen will be stepping in for the upcoming tour

Swedish prog veteran Opeth has just announced the departure of long time drummer Martin Axenrot. Axenrot joined the band back in 2006 and has since laid drum tracks on five studio albums. The exact reasons for the split were left somewhat ambiguous in the post, but some manner of conflict of interest was involved.

As for the ongoing North American tour with Mastodon and Zeal and Ardor, the gigs will happen as planned with Therion drummer Sami Karppinen filling in for Axenrot. The band’s update can be viewed below:
