Swedish progressive metal band Opeth are preparing to step away from touring for an extended period after completing their current Latin American dates. Bassist Martin Mendez has confirmed that the group intends to take a substantial break before turning its attention toward new music.
Speaking with Brazil’s 89 A Rádio Rock, Mendez explained that the ongoing tour marks the end of the promotional cycle for the band’s latest album, “The Last Will And Testament”.
This time around we will have our own show. It’s gonna be longer compared to the last [Latin American tour we did], [when] we were supporting great bands. So, yeah, it’s gonna be a full show. And [I’m] pretty excited. This is the last run for this album. So after this one, we will take a pretty long break. So, yeah, [I’m] pretty excited and looking forward [to it].
In response to inquiries regarding whether Opeth is undertaking an extended hiatus for the purpose of relaxation or if there are intentions to commence work on a new album, Martin provided the following statement.
Both. I think we need to relax first, and then recover, get some new energy, and then start thinking about new music. Yeah.
Upcoming shows:
Opeth is a Swedish progressive metal ensemble originating from Stockholm, established in 1990. The band integrates elements of folk, blues, classical, and jazz into its typically extensive compositions, while also exhibiting substantial influences from death metal, particularly in their earlier works.
Most of their songs feature acoustic guitar segments, Mellotrons, death growls, and pronounced dynamic contrasts. Throughout its history, the band has experienced numerous personnel changes, culminating in the replacement of all original members.
Mikael Åkerfeldt, serving as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter, has been the pivotal force behind Opeth since the exit of founder and lead vocalist David Isberg in 1992. Although the group infrequently performed live in support of their initial four albums, they embarked on their first world tour following the release of the 2001 album “Blackwater Park,” and have since participated in several significant global tours.
