Nirvana will be homaged during this year’s MTV Video Music Awards

At the 2026 “MTV Video Music Awards,” grunge icons Nirvana will take home the “Video Vanguard Award”, as per theprp. They will be the first band to receive the accolade, also known as the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” since 2003 as part of this commemoration of the hugely important Rock & Roll Hall of Famers. Since then, a long list of individual artists have won the prize. Ironically, the year when the aforementioned awards event dropped the “Best Rock” category coincides with this celebration of one of the most prominent hard rock ensembles in decades. The awards ceremony for this year will take place on September 27 in Los Angeles, California, and will be broadcast on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+.

The American rock group Nirvana was founded in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Kurt Cobain, the band’s main singer and guitarist, and Krist Novoselic, the bassist, formed it. Before Dave Grohl joined in 1990, the group had a number of drummers, most notably Chad Channing. Alternative music gained popularity thanks to Nirvana‘s success, and they were sometimes cited as Generation X’s flagship band. They continue to have a large fan base and have an impact on rock culture. Nirvana became well-known in the Seattle grunge culture in the late 1980s. In 1989, the independent musical label Sub Pop released their debut album, “Bleach”. Dynamic contrasts, frequently between quiet verses and loud, hefty choruses, were the foundation of their music.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the lead single from Nirvana‘s historic second album, “Nevermind” (1991), was an unexpected hit after the band signed to the major label DGC Records in 1990. “Nevermind”, a cultural phenomenon of the 1990s, is credited with bringing an end to hair metal’s prominence and was certified thirteen times platinum in the US. Nirvana became well-known throughout the world thanks to its punk style, pop melodies, and themes of social alienation and rejection.
