Swedish death metal supergroup Grand Cadaver, featuring members of Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, Tiamat, and other genre icons, has premiered their explosive new single “Darkened Apathy.” The track arrives as the fourth cut from their forthcoming EP, “The Rot Beneath”, scheduled for release on August 15th, 2025, via Majestic Mountain Records.
The song is a blistering statement of accusation and despair. Described as a “death metal protest song,” the band says the track criticizes a world ablaze yet kept lit by indifference: it portrays a reality where voices of wisdom are suppressed and apathy reigns supreme.
Comprising of vocalist Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect), guitarists Stefan Lagergren (ex‑Tiamat) and Alex Stjernfeldt (Novarupta, Child), bassist Christian Jansson (Dark Tranquillity, Pagandom), and drummer Daniel Liljekvist (ex‑Katatonia), the band made a debut during the 2020 lockdowns and quickly made waves with an intense brand of raw, unfiltered death metal.
Their rise was swift: the 2021 debut EP “Madness Comes” was recorded in three days and peaked at No. 9 on Sweden’s physical charts. Later that year they released the full album “Into the Maw of Death”, followed by the doom-laced 2023 record “Deities of Deathlike Sleep”. With this latest single and upcoming EP, they double down on their heavy‑hit messaging and uncompromising sonic assault.
“The Rot Beneath” will be available on vinyl—featuring several limited editions—and digitally through Bandcamp and other platforms, reaffirming Grand Cadaver’s commitment to both raw analog aesthetics and modern accessibility.
