Machine Head has made a surprising return with the unexpected release of a new single entitled “Sutures.” This track emerges shortly after the band’s frontman, Robb Flynn, contemplated the conclusion of their “UNATØNED” album cycle. Similar to the previously mentioned album, this newly released song features co-production by Flynn and producer Zack Ohren, known for his work with All Shall Perish and Fallujah.

The American heavy metal group Machine Head is based in Oakland, California. Robb Flynn, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, founded the group in 1991 and is still the only original member. Machine Head was one of the first bands in the new wave of American heavy metal because of its aggressive musicianship. Flynn, drummer Matt Alston, guitarist Reece Scruggs, and bassist Jared MacEachern make up its current lineup. Former band members include bassist Adam Duce, drummers Tony Costanza, Chris Kontos, and Dave McClain, and guitarists Logan Mader, Ahrue Lustre, Phil Demmel, and Wacław Kiełtyka; As part of the band’s 25th anniversary tour for its debut album, “Burn My Eyes” (1994), Mader and Kontos played with the group in 2019 and 2020.

Machine Head‘s initial quartet of albums facilitated the expansion of their fan base across Europe; nevertheless, the band did not achieve success in the United States until subsequent releases. The band’s fourth album, “Supercharger” (2001), incited considerable controversy as it was launched merely three weeks following the September 11 attacks.

Its sole single, “Crashing Around You,” along with its music video, which depicted incendiary imagery, was withdrawn from all media platforms. In 2002, the band faced the prospect of disbandment after exiting their contract with Roadrunner Records due to the ensuing controversy; however, they ultimately re-signed with the label.

Following an exploration of groove metal and nu metal in its initial releases, Machine Head transitioned to a more conventional thrash metal aesthetic characterized by extended compositions with its sixth album, “The Blackening” (2007). This work received widespread critical acclaim and was recognized as Album of the Decade by Metal Hammer in 2010; its lead single, “Aesthetics of Hate,” garnered a nomination for a Grammy Award.

The band continued to achieve notable success with its subsequent albums, “Unto the Locust” (2011) and “Bloodstone & Diamonds” (2014). However, they revisited elements of nu metal in their ninth album, “Catharsis” (2018). Machine Head returned to its foundational groove and thrash metal influences with the release of “Of Kingdom and Crown” (2022), which marked the band’s inaugural concept album. Their most recent studio album, “Unatoned”, was released in 2025.
