Lacuna Coil, the iconic Italian metal band, announce their 10th studio album “Sleepless Empire,” the first collection of unreleased tracks after the success of “Black Anima” (released in 2019). They also unveil the new single “Oxygen,” which is accompanied by the hypnotic video shot in Latina and directed by Daniele Tofani that will be available HERE starting at 6 pm.
‘Oxygen’ deals with a moment of emotional difficulty and inner conflict. The lyrics convey a sense of suffocation in a toxic environment, both literally (as you will see in the video) and metaphorically, where every attempt to save oneself, represented by ‘oxygen,’ seems to be in vain. This song encapsulates the struggle to break free from what is somehow holding us back, and shows a path full of obstacles. A raw hymn of vulnerability, resilience and courage in facing even what seems insurmountable. Being submerged in water for hours while shooting the video was cathartic for me, I realized that as pleasant as the sensation of floating can be, in a moment it could become dangerous and even deadly if I was not careful. I thought it was a similar feeling to the one in the song. Cristina Scabbia
The inspiration for “Sleepless Empire” came during the recording sessions for “Comalies XX” (2022), the highly acclaimed remake of the “Comalies” album originally released in 2002. “Sleepless Empire” was written and recorded between Milan, the band’s hometown, and Como, home of the SPVN studio. Like the previous albums, this one also features Marco “Maki” Coti Zelati on production, while the artwork was curated by Roberto Toderico, a talented Italian artist. Enriching the band’s new work are two other talents such as Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God, featured on “Hosting The Shadow,” and Ash Costello of New Years Day who added his contribution to “In The Mean Time.”
Always fans of the gaming world, after the release of the official game “Horns Up” and the collaboration with Zombicide for which they wrote “Never Dawn,” Lacuna Coil created a divination “game” with custom dice, included exclusively in the “Sleepless Empire “box set.
The new album contains 11 tracks each representing the perfect soundtrack to a specific time and place. In “Sleepless Empire,” the setting is dark, cinematic and features all the characteristics that have always distinguished the band in the metal scene.
“Sleepless Empire” tells, through our eyes, the chaos of a generation trapped in a digital world that never stops, where social media destroys identity and pushes us, more and more each day, to turn into soulless zombies. We are caught in the middle, have lived through the world in analog and are now living in the modern one, trying to understand the evolution and meaning of everything. In each track, the journey is a harbinger of rebellion, a desperate attempt to find ourselves in an age that seems to have lost its sense of time and reality.”
