The founding member and frontman of Norwegian black metal giant Satyricon, Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven is not just one of the genre’s most recognizable voices but also one of its key figures. Born in November 1975, the musician has led the band since 1991 and has been a central figure in the second wave of Norwegian black metal. Throughout his long career, he has developed the band’s sound from primitive black metal to its current style that incorporates traditional heavy metal elements.
Chaoszine met with Wongraven before Satyricon’s show at Helsinki Ice Hall on April 22, where the band was opening for Behemoth alongside Rotting Christ. In the interview, Satyr opened up about his journey as a metal vocalist – from early experiments with brutal vocals to finding his own voice in a genre that demands both aggression and authenticity.
Over the years, Wongraven has also faced personal challenges, such as a brain tumor diagnosed in 2015, which forced him to reassess his life and musical goals. Despite this, Satyricon has remained strong, and the band is one of the few original Norwegian black metal bands that have successfully risen to the mainstream while maintaining their credibility.
