Founded in 1998, High on Fire is an American heavy metal band based in Oakland, California. Sleep‘s founder and frontman, Matt Pike, also plays guitar in the band. The song “Electric Messiah” by High on Fire received the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Nine studio albums have been issued by the group. George Rice, the bassist, and drummer Des Kensel are the other original members. Rice first tried out to be the band’s vocalist. Rice had previously performed with Dear Deceased. A three-song EP by High on Fire was published by 12th Records in 1999. On March 7, 2000, Man’s Ruin Records issued “The Art of Self Defense”, the band’s debut full-length album, which featured the three re-recorded songs.

Man’s Ruin Records had gone out of business, therefore Tee Pee Records reissued “The Art of Self Defense” with two new bonus tracks the following year. High on Fire recorded the album “Surrounded by Thieves”, which was released on May 28, 2002, after signing a record deal with Relapse Records in 2001. The band played at the Relapse Records Contamination Festival on January 19, 2003. Bassist George Rice departed the group following the “Surrounded by Thieves” promotional tours, and former Melvins/Thrones bassist Joe Preston took his place.
