Hatebreed was established in 1994 in the vicinity of New Haven, Connecticut. The original lineup comprised Jamey Jasta as the lead vocalist, Chris Beattie on bass, and Dave Russo on drums, alongside guitarists Larry Dwyer Jr. and Wayne Lozinak.
The quintet initiated their journey by producing a three-song demo, which they distributed locally in 1995. These tracks were subsequently included in a split 7-inch release with Neglect from New York within the same year.
They then released the highly regarded EP “Under the Knife,” initially slated for distribution by Big Wheel Recreation in 1995, but ultimately self-released in 1996. Following this, they embarked on a tour across the East Coast and Midwest, supporting the UK hardcore band Voorhees.
In that same year, Larry Dwyer Jr. and Dave Russo departed from the group. The subsequent year, with a nearly entirely reconstituted lineup, the band unveiled their debut album “Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire” under Victory Records, a label known for housing prominent American hardcore acts.
This album facilitated the band’s attainment of underground acclaim, with sales reaching 158,000 copies, as reported by Nielsen SoundScan. It also holds the distinction of being Victory Records’ best-selling debut album and is regarded as a seminal work within both the hardcore and metalcore genres.
