The second single, “Rock n’ Roll is not dead”, from Finnish hard rock band Serpico’s upcoming full-length album is anything but bland or meaningless. The track encapsulates everything the band is known for: a defining motto, attitude-driven rock, a catchy melody, and credible lyrics. The song is accompanied by a music video that supports the theme, conceptualized by the band’s drummer Jani Serpico and brought to life by director Eetu Salmi and his production team. The video draws inspiration from the legendary Finnish music show Jyrki, as well as iconic ’80s music videos by artists such as Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, U2 and Van Halen.
Jani and Serpico‘s vocalist Vee Dour share the story behind the song as follows:
“Jani was excited about the lyrics he had written and presented them to the whole band. I was instantly inspired to start composing and added my own take on the lyrics — after all, the song’s punchline, ‘Rock n’ Roll is not dead!’, is the same one we’ve been hashtagging in our social media posts for over ten years. It’s a motto Jani and I came up with together for the band, kind of like the ‘Punks not dead’ slogan for punk rockers. I knew exactly what the song needed to sound like: sweaty, pheromone-scented, attitude-driven rock ’n’ roll that makes you feel good, all seasoned with Serpico’s signature flavor. Our guitarist Snage also got excited and threw his own ink into the mix, tweaking a few chords that made the song even better. In the studio, our producer Anssi Kippo made a few final lyrical adjustments together with me — the vibe stayed the same, but the context evolved. The end result: ‘Rock n’ Roll is not dead’!”

“For me, the phrase ‘Rock n’ Roll is not dead’ has always been close to my heart and plays such a big role in both my life and in our band that I decided to write a song about it as soon as the first spark of inspiration hit. It took a few years, sure, but I believe the time is right now, because today’s rock ’n’ roll largely lacks what I’ve always admired most about the genre: originality and authenticity. The idea for the song actually came from the time when a lot of people were shouting in music media that ‘rock is dead’ and blah blah… That’s absolutely not true — rock ’n’ roll is alive and doing just fine. Hopefully, commercial radio stations and mainstream media will wake up to that as well!”
-Jani Serpico
The single, along with its music video, was released on June 20th and has already drawn attention not only in Finland but also abroad: in fact, Metal Hammer Germany included the video on its list of the week’s most important music videos on the very day it was released. Cinematographer Eetu Salmi shares insights about the intriguing video project:
“Working on set with Serpico was a really fun experience, and I think the great vibe we had during the shoot comes through in the video for the viewer as well!”
Serpico’s upcoming album “Dressed in Flesh” was recorded entirely using analog equipment at Astia Studio in Lappeenranta, with the producer Anssi Kippo. He shares his thoughts on the new single as follows:
“Serpico’s delightfully positive second single from the upcoming ‘Dressed in Flesh’ -album will get even the grumpiest person tapping their dancing foot. Bland and meaningless are definitely not words to describe this track. The new rise of street-credible rock music has begun, as Serpico proclaims: ‘Let me tell you, baby, rock is not dead!’”
Serpico is:
Vee Dour – vocals
Snage – guitars
Matt Gee – bass
Jani Serpico – drums
