Bay Area thrash metal veterans Death Angel have unveiled a new single, “The Never Was”, on November 5 through Nuclear Blast. The song arrives with an official lyric visualizer and takes aim at people whose egos compel them to make every situation about themselves.
The track delivers the band’s familiar combination of aggressive riffs, rapid-fire rhythms and Mark Osegueda’s commanding vocals, while its lyrics address a form of self-absorption that the singer believes has become especially visible on social media.
Explaining the inspiration behind “The Never Was”, Osegueda said the lyrics concern individuals who turn conversations, tragedies and even other people’s successes into opportunities for self-promotion. He noted that social media provides an even larger platform for that behavior.
The singer also revealed that the song was inspired by a couple of real people, although he did not identify them. He described the track as a thrash metal counterpart to Carly Simon’s classic “You’re So Vain”.
Osegueda said he wanted to express his frustration with what he sees as a particularly exhausting personality trait through angry music, adding that the people who inspired the lyrics might be too self-involved to recognize themselves in the song.
The official lyric visualizer for “The Never Was” features original drawings and video production by Tamara Llenas of Aimed & Framed. Mark Richards created the single’s cover artwork.
The release follows two standalone singles issued by Death Angel in 2025: “Wrath (Bring Fire)” and “Cult Of The Used”. Those songs marked the group’s return with new material after 2019’s Grammy-nominated album “Humanicide”. No release date for a new full-length studio album has been announced.
The band’s current lineup consists of vocalist Mark Osegueda, guitarists Rob Cavestany and Ted Aguilar, bassist Damien Sisson and drummer Will Carroll.
Death Angel are preparing for further concerts in Europe and Australia, as well as their traditional year-end holiday performances. Their ongoing celebration of 1990’s “Act III” includes shows where the landmark album is performed in full, with more dates expected to be announced for 2027.
The band has remained a central name in Bay Area thrash since the 1980s, with a career spanning albums such as “The Ultra-Violence”, “Frolic Through the Park” and “Act III” through their later releases.
Fans can hear “The Never Was” on major streaming platforms and watch the lyric visualizer through the band’s official channels.
