Danny Carey (Tool) and John Tempesta (The Cult) join Seahawks drumline before NFL game

Two drummers with formidable résumés in heavy music made an unusual appearance on an NFL stage over the weekend. Danny Carey of Tool and John Tempesta of The Cult joined the Seattle Seahawks’ Blue Thunder drumline at Lumen Field on Sunday, October 25.

The musicians played alongside the team’s percussion ensemble ahead of the Seahawks’ home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Both wore Seahawks jerseys with the number 12, the number closely associated with Seattle’s supporters.

From heavy-rock stages to a football stadium

The on-field collaboration brought together two different approaches to live percussion: the tightly coordinated patterns of a sports drumline and the experience of drummers more commonly seen performing in arenas and concert halls.

Carey has spent decades behind the kit with Tool, whose rhythms are a defining feature of the band’s progressive-metal sound. Tempesta currently plays with The Cult and has also performed with White Zombie and other heavy-rock acts.

Unlike an album or tour announcement, this was a standalone performance. The Seahawks shared official footage of the appearance, which can be watched below.
