Conny Bloom (Electric Boys / Hanoi Rocks) releases cover version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”, starts Swedish tour this week

Ten years ago, on 18 March 2016, Conny Bloom released his first Swedish-language solo album, “Fullt Upp”, via Kronbloom Records. For this release, the Electric Boys frontman and former Hanoi Rocks guitarist had originally planned a Swedish-language cover version of Jimi Hendrix‘s “Purple Haze“, which has now been released in its original language:

“Dropped a new single […], Jimi’s ‘Purple Haze’. Why the hell would you record that, you might think. And I would probably think the same, because Jimi’s stuff is kinda sacred and difficult to re-do. So why? I had the idea about 11 years ago to do something in Swedish, to get ‘out of the box’, out of my comfort zone. For some reason that I can’t remember at all, I just dived into Purple Haze and wrote a swedish lyric to it. Just to see how singing in swedish would work. Then we went on to do the album. The last song we recorded was Purple Haze. When my publisher came to the studio to listen, he said it was great but that we gotta check with Jimi’s people if we can use it. Because I had written a swedish lyric it’s not considered doing a cover version, more like re-writing it. Turned out it was a big no-no. The track was lying around for years until I heard it again and realised what a different version it actually was. I found myself really diggin’ it so I resung it in english with Jimi’s lyrics. Now it’s 10 years since that record and we’re starting the tour on the 8th in Malmö. Figured it needed a soundtrack so here goes. Hope you dig. Hendrix forever!”
